The U.S. Air Force announced the creation of its Military Spouse Attorney Hiring Program. The Program allows military spouse attorneys to be noncompetitively hired into civilian attorney positions in the U.S. Air Force TJAG’s hiring authority pursuant to Air Force Instruction 51-101, Chapter 8.

Dawn Gile, MSJDN’s President, congratulated the U.S. Air Force for prioritizing military spouse attorney hiring. “The Military Spouse J.D. Network (MSJDN) has been advocating for such a program for many years and we are thrilled to see the Air Force implement good policy to improve the quality of life of military families.”

The Program requires the attorney to be a graduate of an ABA-accredited law school; be licensed and in good standing; reside within the local commuting area of, or have orders to, the position’s locale; and meet the Department of Defense Instruction 14402.02 and Air Force Instruction 51-101 minimum qualifications.  The Program is limited to military spouse attorneys currently married to a military sponsor “in the Regular component” of any branch of service. Additional eligibility requirements are listed in the attached announcement.

Lyndsay Lujan, MSJDN’s Federal Employment Director, said, “This Program could not come at a better time for military spouse attorneys seeking employment. Military spouse attorneys are often overlooked, underemployed, or underpaid because they lack continuous employment as their families are relocated across the world every few years. Not only will this Program provide an opportunity for military spouse attorneys to be gainfully employed, this Program will contribute to the readiness of the United States Armed Services.”

To be considered for this Program, the military spouse attorney must be register with the U.S. Air Force Professional Development Directorate of the Office of The Judge Advocate General (AF/JAX) and submit the attached form.  For further information, military spouse attorneys can contact AF/JAX at usaf.pentagon.af-ja.mbx.af-jax-workflow@mail.mil or 703-614-3021.

Don’t forget! If you are seeking employment, you may also wish to register for the U.S. Army JAG Corps Military Spouse Attorney Hiring Program. To do so, please contact Ms. Sarah Ford at sarah.p.ford3.civ@mail.mil.
